Write the spoken line before the ink
The sheet is there so the sentence can be said. If the sentence is not known, the ink will start deciding the meeting.
Arthit does not like to draw into a silence. If I have not written the spoken line, even roughly, he will leave the table and make tea. He is right to wait. A beautiful comparison that no one is going to say becomes furniture.
The spoken line is short. For a Board Narrative Sitting it runs about four minutes if it is said at a human pace, with pauses for the room to look. For a Season Review Narrative it is closer to two. It is written in the words the executive already uses. If they say “the wet months” and the pack says “Q3 rainfall variance,” the line says “the wet months.” The sheet can carry a quieter label. The mouth should not have to translate.
We draft the line before the sheets are finished, and we change the sheets when the line cannot be said. A common failure is a middle sheet that introduces a second argument. The line stumbles there. We cut the sheet or we move it to the appendix. The appendix is not a defeat. It is where true numbers go when they are not the argument of the hour.
People sometimes ask for the line to sound more assured than the pack. We will not do that. If the quarter is thin, the line says it is thin, and the sheet shows the thinness at the same scale as the strong year. Assurance that the figures do not support is how a room loses trust in the next sitting.
If you want to try this before you commission us, write four sentences you could say with the pack closed. Read them aloud once. Wherever you reach for a table you cannot see, that is a sheet. Wherever you add a number that does not change the sentence, that number can wait.
